I cant say enough good things about VirtalBox + my macbook air combination, and like i said virtualbox is free, so you dont have too much to lose. There are some things that dont work atm using virtualbox, such as Aero and some USB issues, but these are non-issues for what i need to use windows for. Incidentally the normal boot operation is only a few seconds, roughly 7sec or so to the login screen, which is a lot faster than my last dedicated windows machine i had. You can also save your windows session as a snapshot to disk, which means next time you start youre back at where you were last without going through bootup, login, etc. It grows as needed, and you can also change this later. You are asked how big you want this to be, in my case ive set it to 30GB. Whats also great is there is no need to create boot partitions, the VM creates just a big file on your drive which is your windows machine. Enter vm's.Ī VM such as VirtualBox, runs as an application inside your Mac, so you can have Windows 7, or pretty much any other OS running inside OSX.

I really wante to avoid having Windows on my new Mac like this, it just kind of feels too permanent, and its not what i bought my first Mac for. Wether you want to boot into Mac or whatever OS youve installed. It creates an extra partition on your drive and you choose at startup I like to allocate a little bit more to Windows as i know a few of the coding tools can be a little hungry.īootcamp is not a virtual machine. Ps: one more little thing, when running Windows using VirtualBox, im allocating 3GB to Windows and 1GB to Mac and im having no problems.īasically i might have Chromium running in Mac, finder, preview and its all fine.

This is my first Mac and i cant say enough good things about it.Īs for optical drive, im using a Samsung SE-S084 and it works no problems, its what i used to install Windows into the VM.

The great thing about using VirtualBox is that your windows machine is just basically one big file on your Mac disk, no fancy cumbersome dual installs needed, plus i didnt want windows polluting my Mac too much. In fact i tried installing SQL Server Express on a Vista 64 machine that was lying around, denied! it didnt work, but under the VM all is working well. After initial install it had only used about 9-10GB.Īt the moment with SQL Server Express and MATLAB installed, plus a few other things like Chrome browser for my windows coding, the file has grown to 17GB, and im having no problems.
I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit using VirtualBox which is free, no need to Bootcamp. I have exactly the setup you are thiking of getting, a mid year2011 11" i5 with 4GB ram and a 128GB SSD.
